I have copied this from my restoration thread on www.escortrscosworth.com so that the local members can also see how my engine build is getting on.

Before I start this restoration thread I thought I would give you a little background information.

Previous to my Escort Cosworth I had already owned two other RS cars, the first one was a white Escort RST S2, and the second was a black Fiesta RST.

I have been a member of the RS owners club for over 13 years, when I purchased my first RS in 1996.

Even though I was an RS member I did not attend any shows or local meetings, but after buying my Fiesta RST someone put a calling card on it one day, inviting me to come along to a local meet.  As I live in Norfolk this was the RSOC Norfolk group, and as some may have already guessed you now who is chairman, one Mr Rainbird who at the time had a certain grey Sapphire Cosworth.  After a while of going to local meetings and reading magazines etc I really wanted an Escort Cosworth!
In August 1999 I started looking, but found it hard to find one in the colour I wanted (Blue) and at the right price and condition.  I finally purchased one from Duncan at Automotive Unlimited, which was a better priced car for me in better condition than others I had looked at, only thing that could have been a problem is that it was Mallard Green not blue!  This really wasn’t an issue when we saw it for the first time gleaming in the sunshine & I have never regretted the colour!

From 1999 to 2003 the Escort was our daily drive and in standard form very reliable, although any little problems were quickly sorted and in most cases upgraded!
In 2000 I took part in a friendly grudge match “Cosworth Vs Impreza” for REVS magazine which came out in July 2000.  My car was to represent the standard class, as at this point I still had not upgraded brakes, engine, suspension etc.  This was the first time I had really driven it hard and I enjoyed it!

Me on the right, Stef (Cossie Killer) on the left.

In 2002 the RS was in need of a new head gasket, and while at SCS I also treated it to a stage one chip.

Also in 2002 I had a little problem with an engine mount resulting in disaster...

From 2003 I started getting lifts in & out of work, which was great cheaper running costs, fuel etc and kept the miles off the car.  After a while our lift had to stop, so I decided to get a run around and the Escort became our second car.

April 2003 RSOC Central day at Santapod.

March 2003 top speed day at RAF Woodbridge, 133mph from stage one 1.25miles

YouTube- Escort Cosworth Top Speed Run 2003

In 2004 I decided on a slight engine upgrade, we had recently had a rolling road day at Engine Advantages & I got chatting to Paul.  I booked the car in for green injectors, 3 bar map sensor, fuel pump upgrade, map & mild anti lag!  Due to mileage I asked Paul to map for 300bhp, he got it close at 308bhp.  The car drove really well and pulled harder and further up the rev range.  Despite the problems some people have with Paul for me he did what he said and it transformed the car.

This was taken at the rolling road day before I upgraded

During 2006 while at a track day @ Snetterton I had a wiring issue, which also caused my ABS pump to burn!  This had my car out of action for a while until I could get it sorted.  Also don't be fooled, the Escort ABS pump is the same as a Sapphire Cosworth, also Granada Scorpio V6 amongst others, they have the same part number.

During October 2007 again at a track day @ Snetterton, I had a rather nasty experience, plumes of smoke pouring out of the back!  This has stopped play until now, as it is in the hands of SCS having a full engine rebuild.  The Escort should come back even better than before, and with a bit more horsepower too!

Over the years I have upgraded & added parts to the car, here is a list so far...
  • Koni Suspension
  • Ahmed Springs
  • Group A Head gasket
  • Green Injectors
  • 3 Bar Map Sensor
  • P8 Baby board (mild anti-lag)
  • Powerflex Bushes full kit at the front
  • Powerflex Bushes some at rear
  • 308mm front disc conversion (std calipers, std wheels)
  • Earls Braided Brake hoses
  • Group A Cone Filter
  • Pro Alloy 50mm intercooler (there first one)
  • Pro Alloy Water Swirl Pot
  • Pro Alloy oil breather
  • Pro Alloy Turbo cooler
  • RS500 Style Fog light grills
  • Full Samco Water matrix silicon hoses
  • Full Samco boost hoses
  • Engine Mounts (std)
  • New Radiator
  • SECS ECU Monitor (one of the first)
  • Turbo Timer

That's all I can think of at the moment, of course this does not include wear and tear things like service items, tyres, water pumps, alternators, batterys, pads, discs, front hockey sticks, front deflectors & splitters, clutch, inner drive shaft joint & spiders, light stalks etc.
Many of the items above were purchased from Mike @ R&B Motorsport - thanks Mike :top:

An interesting read, didn't realise you'd had a little mag coverage too.

This is still the only EsCos I've ever been in (maybe even the first Cosworth actually), really made an impression though. They just feel totally different to Sierra's. Despite sharing so many components, it just feels proper different.

Be nice to see it out and about again!

I must have been a while ago you were in it, may have been when I only had stage one power?
Will be nice to have my RS running again, cant wait!

Yeah would be going back a good while now. Couldn't tell you when exactly though. Be nice to see it back though, do love it, in the best colour too!

I've driven both the FRST and ERST and I like both. The Fez was the first RS I drove and definately left an impression for me!

Harvey must have been tinkering with his Escort at the back there as it was under a cover when I went. Wink

420bhp.  Just a stab in the dark. Wink  Hope you're saving for a new gearbox, those MT75s are made of chocolate. Wink

close, and I think Francis is correct in saying light blues would not go to 420bhp, not sure if they would safely make it to 400 TBH.
